How to hire the best
builder for the job
Perhaps you’ve enjoyed a certain room at a friend’s house, or you’ve noticed a beautiful space at your neighbor’s. Maybe your home has an outdated, inactive section — and you want to update and enjoy it instead of closing the door and ignoring it. Either way, you’re ready to hire someone to make an improvement.
Done right, home improvements are an incredible investment. It does more than increase the value, nicer spaces mean better usage. You’ve spent money to live there, you deserve to enjoy every part of it. So how do you choose the best builder?
We hope this guide will give you all the tools to make an informed decision when the time comes to hire someone for your project.
1. Research
Ask for recommendations
First, ask around! Someone may know a builder who could be a great fit. Or, you may be able to learn from someone’s hiring mistake. Afterwards, do some research to become better acquainted with professionals in your area.
Gather inspiration
Find designs that you like from sites like Pinterest and save them for your walkthrough with the builder. These photos will help you better communicate what you’re looking to create.
2. Walkthrough
After your research, schedule phone calls or walkthroughs with your top two choices. Prepare to discuss your pictures and questions. Here’s a few more things you can ask:
1. Do you have a list of references that I can contact? Some builders may have done great work. But were they great to work with? Did they show up late every day, use bad language, leave food wrappers and cigarette butts on the property, charge by the hour, work slow, and hit the customer with a random bill at the end? Sure, the builder’s website probably shows nice photos. But do they tell the whole story of what happened on the job? Consider checking references for due diligence.
2. How long does design and installation take? It’s fair to ask for a timeline. The builder should give clear expectations.
3. What future costs should I expect? Don’t hesitate about this one. For example, some builders use cheap wood that requires restaining every two years. Know what you’re getting into.
4. Do you offer maintenance? If there is ever a need to have a repair, make sure the builder you’ve chosen will be able to help you in a timely fashion.
3. Hire
It can seem like a lot of fuss to find the best builder. But our industry has an expression that rings true: measure twice cut once. The extra effort reduces mistakes. If you’ve taken the time to read this guide, you’re set up for success.
